Job Overview:
The South African National Parks (SANParks) offers a dynamic and hands-on Internship Programme aimed at providing recent graduates and young professionals with the opportunity to gain experience in various fields related to wildlife conservation, environmental management, and sustainable tourism. This 12-month internship is designed to enhance the practical skills of candidates while supporting the objectives of SANParks in preserving South Africa’s natural heritage.
Position Purpose:
The SANParks Internship Programme seeks to provide aspiring individuals with the knowledge and skills required for a successful career in the conservation and environmental sectors. By joining SANParks, interns will actively contribute to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management, and community-based tourism while working alongside seasoned professionals in a variety of fields within the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in wildlife monitoring, research, and habitat management within various national parks.
- Participate in conservation projects, assisting with species management, invasive species control, and rehabilitation efforts.
- Support the sustainability initiatives of SANParks by conducting environmental impact assessments and promoting eco-friendly practices.
- Engage in community outreach programs to raise awareness about conservation and promote sustainable tourism.
- Provide administrative support including report writing, data collection, and analysis related to environmental and wildlife management activities.
- Assist in organizing events, workshops, and campaigns aimed at educating the public on environmental conservation.
- Support the operations of the relevant park divisions, gaining practical experience across a range of conservation tasks.
Education:
- A degree or diploma in one of the following fields is required:
- Environmental Science
- Wildlife Conservation
- Zoology
- Ecology
- Nature Conservation
- Tourism and Hospitality
- Sustainable Development
Experience:
- Although prior experience is not required, any practical exposure to wildlife conservation, environmental management, or tourism will be advantageous.
- A strong passion for environmental conservation, wildlife protection, and sustainable development is essential.
Skills:
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A willingness to learn, adapt, and contribute to various projects.
- Basic knowledge of research methodologies and data collection techniques.
- Interest in working in a nature-based environment, with a focus on wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism.
